Indonesia new notes reported for introduction 19.12.2016

According to an article in JakartaGlobe, on 19 December 2016, Bank Indonesia plans to introduce new banknotes denominated in 1000, 2000, 10000, 20000, and 50000 rupiah with new portraits and enhanced security features, such as color-shifting metallic foil security patches, latent images of BI logo, and tactile patterns.

Indonesia new family of banknotes announced

Following the issuance of Presidential Decree No. 31 of 5 September 2016, Bank Indonesia plans to introduce seven new banknote designs featuring national heroes:

  • 1,000 rupiah: Tjut Meutiah
  • 2,000 rupiah: M. H. Thamrin
  • 5,000 rupiah: K. H. Idham
  • 10,000 rupiah: Frans Kaisiepo
  • 20,000 rupiah: Gerungan Saul Samuel Jacob Ratulangi
  • 50,000 rupiah: Juanda Kartawidjaja
  • 100,000 rupiah: Soekarno and Mohammad Hatta

The press release is unclear if the notes will be issued in 2016, or if the design phase will begin this year. It typically takes many years to develop a new family of notes from conception to introduction into circulation.

South Korea's banknote printing firm secures Indonesia substrate contract

According to an article in The Korean Times dated 20 April 2015, the Korea Minting and Security Printing Corporation (KOMSCO) is seeking customers outside of Korea to offset declines in production brought about by the introduction of a 50,000-won note (BOK B53) in 2009 and the public's increased usage of credit cards instead of cash. "KOMSCO signed a deal with the Indonesian government in February to supply 8 million 'security papers' with enhanced security functions for 880 million won over the next three years," said CEO Kim Hwa-dong. The article mentions that KOMSCO has produced banknotes for the Indonesian government in the past several years, but doesn't identify precisely which notes it printed. Curiously, all current notes in Indonesia (BI B104-B108) bear the imprint PERUM PERCETAKAN UANG RI IMP and make no mention of KOMSCO.

According to an article in The Jakarta Post dated 19 August 2014, Bank Indonesia officially released a new 100,000-rupiah note on 17 August. The new note is like the current note of the same denomination (Pick P153), but with BANK INDONESIA at lower left front replaced with NEGARA KESATUAN REPUBLIK INDONESIA (The Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia) and is the first note to bear the signature of a finance minister (Menteri Keuangan). Previously, only top bank officials had their signatures printed on the notes.

Governor Agus Martowardojo also said that Bank Indonesia is moving forward with plans to redenominate the rupiah by slashing three zeroes from the currency.

Indonesia new notes from new issuer reportedly set for 17.08.2014 introduction

According to an article on Tempo.co dated 19 June 2014, Indonesia plans to issue new banknotes on 17 August 2014, Independence Day. The new banknotes will have "Negara Kesatuan Republik Indonesia" (Republic of Indonesia) written on them, replacing the name of the current issuer, Bank Indonesia. The new banknotes will still have the same denominations as the current notes, will still have pictures of national figures, and are claimed to be harder to counterfeit.

Indonesia has been tinkering with the idea of changing its notes and revaluing its currency for years, with various plans in the past having failed to come to fruition. As such, it's probably wise not to put too much faith in this latest report.

South Korea banknote printer seeking more overseas contracts

12-02(124)
According to an article in Korea Times dated 24 June 2014, Korea Minting, Security Printing & ID Card Operating Corp. (KOMSCO) has seen its production volume halved over the past five years, and hopes to utilize excess capacity by obtaining contracts to print banknotes for other countries. Countries for which KOMSCO has produced or is producing "currencies" (may include coins, not just banknotes) include China, Indonesia, Israel, Japan, Libya, Peru, Switzerland, Thailand, and Vietnam. Last year KOMSCO won an order from Peru to produce 305 million 50-nuevo sole notes, with delivery to be completed by the end of June 2014.

redenominasi
After many years of discussion, according to this article dated 22 July 2013, it appears Bank Indonesia is moving closer to issuing redenominated notes on 1 January 2014. The new notes retain the same color schemes and depict the same people as the existing notes, although the portraits are redesigned and three zeros have been removed from the denominations. The new and old notes will circulate in parallel, and the old notes will remain valid for up to 10 years. The plan still awaits approval from the House of Representatives.

Indonesia redenomination plans move a step closer to implementation

According to an article in The Jakarta Post dated 7 December 2011, the government has approved Bank Indonesia’s proposal to redenominate the rupiah by eliminating three zeros. A draft law is being finalized and still needs to be approved by the Law and Human Rights Ministry, then passed by the House of Representatives.

Bank Indonesia announced that the rupiah’s redenomination would be carried out in four stages over 10 years to minimize public confusion: information campaign to alert the public (2011-2012), transition period (2013-2015), the gradual withdrawal of the “old” rupiah (2016-2018), and the use of the “new” rupiah (2019-2020).

The redenomination would mean the 1,000-rupiah banknote, the nation’s smallest denomination, would become a 1-rupiah note, but the value would remain the same (currently US$0.10).

Indonesia announces new notes to be issued in late 2011

According to an article in JakartaGlobe dated 13 August 2011, Bank Indonesia is planning to upgrade the security of its banknotes with a new series to be printed by October at the latest. The new notes will feature “rainbow printing,” which allows several colors to be printed using a single plate in specially modified equipment, resulting in a natural blending of the colors that is difficult to reproduce using commercially available printers. The only Indonesian note to currently feature rainbow printing is the 10,000-rupiah note dated 2010, shown above.

“Now we will also use rainbow printing for the Rp 20,000, Rp 50,000 and Rp 100,000 bills. This is in line with international standards,” said Muhammad Dahlan, the central bank’s director for circulation.

Indonesia dispells rumor of error on 100,000-rupiah note

On 6 October 2010 Bank Indonesia issued the following press release:

No. 12 / 45 / PSHM / Humas
The rumour that Rp100,000 denominated banknotes displaying Soekarno-Hatta would be withdrawn from circulation due to a misprint of the Proclamation of Independence, in particular the inclusion of the year ’05 [in small print between the two portraits on front], can be immediately quashed by the following key points:

1. The inclusion of the Proclamation text on the Rp100,000 banknote corresponds to the original manuscript, more specifically "Djakarta, 17th Day, 8th Month of the Year ‘05". In this case the year ’05 refers to historical facts where Japan remained in power at that time, therefore, the calendar in use is Japanese and refers to the year 2605, abbreviated to ’05.

2. The Rp100,000 banknote issued by Bank Indonesia in 2004 was designed in close collaboration with several relevant parties, including those with extensive knowledge of the proclamation text in question.

3. Therefore, the Rp100,000 denominated banknote exhibiting Soekarno-Hatta is not a misprint and remains legal tender.

4. To all members of the public we appeal to disregard this issue as well as any information that cannot be accounted for.

Indonesia contemplating currency revaluation

On 3 August 2010, Darmin Nasution, the incoming governor of Bank Indonesia stated the central bank is studying revaluing its currency by removing two or three zeros from the rupiah in an attempt to make economic transactions more efficient and bring the currency in line with those of Indonesia’s neighbors. The study won’t be completed until the end of this year, and any move to revalue the rupiah wouldn’t take place until 2013 at the earliest. Currently the largest denomination in Indonesia is the 100,000-rupiah (US$11.20) note.

Indonesia new 10,000-rupiah note confirmed

On 20 July 2010, Bank Indonesia began issuing new 1,000-rupiah coins and 10,000-rupiah (US$1.10) notes. The coins have a picture of Garuda Pancasila on the front, and the angklung traditional musical instrument on the back against the background of the Gedung Sate building in Bandung.

The new 10,000-rupiah note is similar to the preceding issue, but the overall color has changed from reddish purple to a bluish purple, and several security features have been revised:

• Additional security elements in the form of rainbow printing in a pentagon shape, which has the effect of changing color (rainbow effect) when observed from certain angles, on the right-hand side of the main image;

• Additional small red (Omron) rings filled in white scattered on the right-hand side of the main image;

• A change to the blind code, consisting of a circle that was previously invisible, which is now visible and noticeable to the touch (intaglio printmaking), positioned on the right-hand side of the main image;

• Discontinuation of Optically Variable Ink in the shape of an octagon, which changed from green to blue when viewed from different angles. Instead opting for the BI design logo framed by an ornament from the Palembang region, which does not change color (offset printing), positioned on the bottom right-hand side of the note.

Indonesia to replace 1,000-rupiah note with coin in April

According to an article in The Jakarta Post dated 4 February 2010, “Bank Indonesia's (BI) plan to start minting 800 million new Rp 1,000 (about 10 US cents) coins has been delayed until April, a central bank official says. Yopie Alimudin, the central bank's deputy director for currency circulation said, as quoted by kompas.com, that the original plan was to start minting the new coin in February, but it was delayed due to “certain reasons”. He did not elaborate. BI had planned to issue a Rp 2,000 banknote (about 22 US cents) and a Rp 1,000 coin this year. Only the new banknote has been circulating. The Rp 2,000 bill will be the country's smallest denomination banknote once the Rp 1,000 coin takes the place of the existing Rp 1,000 bill. The new coins, like the new bill, will use Braille making them more convenient for visually impaired people. BI is preparing new designs and security systems to discourage counterfeiters. The last time BI issued new-look banknotes was in 2005, with its release of new Rp 50,000 and Rp 100,000 bills. The central bank will issue approximately Rp 5.6 billion worth of banknotes and coins this year. At present, BI coins come in denominations of Rp 100, Rp 200, and Rp 500, while banknotes are in denominations of either Rp 1,000, Rp 5,000, Rp 10,000, Rp 20,000, Rp 50,000 or Rp 100,000.”

Indonesia issues new 2,000-rupiah note

On 9 July 2009, Bank Indonesia introduced a brand new 2,000-rupiah (US$0.20) note which joins the currently circulating denominations of 1,000, 5,000, 10,000, 20,000, 50,000, and 100,000 rupiah. Bank Indonesia states that the banknote is fulfilling a need among the Indonesian population to have a value between the much-used values of 1,000 and 5,000 rupiah.

The mainly gray-colored banknote measures 141 x 65 and features a portrait of Prince Antasari on the front. He is a national hero from Banjarmasin in South Kalimantan. At the back side is a drawing of a traditional Dayak dance. The display of a national hero is a continuation of the current set of banknotes already in circulation, which all feature national
Indonesian heroes. The banknote has a watermark of the prince, a solid security thread with printed BI 2000, and microprinting.
